What is POM Plastic Material ?

Polyoxymethylene (referred to as POM/Derlin). It is obtained by polymerizing formaldehyde as a raw material. POM-H (polyoxymethylene polymer) and POM-K (polyoxymethylene copolymer) are thermoplastic engineering plastics with high density and high crystallinity. It has good physical, mechanical and chemical properties, especially excellent friction resistance.

Polyoxymethylene is a linear polymer with no side chains, high density and high crystallinity, which has excellent comprehensive properties; the surface of this material is smooth, shiny, hard and dense, showing light yellow or white, and can be used at -40 Long-term use in the temperature range of -100°C. Its wear resistance and self-lubrication are also superior to most engineering plastics, and it has good oil resistance and peroxide resistance, but it is not resistant to acids, strong alkalis, or ultraviolet radiation.

Advantage of CNC POM Plastic Machining Parts

1. POM has good fatigue resistance and impact resistance, and is suitable for manufacturing gear products subject to cyclical loads;

2. Good creep resistance. Compared with other plastics, POM has less creep in a wider temperature range and can be used as a sealing part;

3. Good wear resistance. POM has self-lubricating properties and low coefficient of friction, which makes it suitable for bearings and shafts;

4. Good heat resistance. Long-term use at higher temperatures has little change in mechanical properties. The working temperature of homopolymerized POM is 100°C, and that of copolymerized POM is 114°C.

5. Low water absorption, insensitive to the presence of moisture during molding.

POM Application Range – CNC Machining Parts

1. Electronic appliances: washing machine, fruit juice machine parts, keyboard, timer components, audio/video equipment, etc.;

2. Automobile: handlebars, electric windows, snap buttons, reels, sliders, etc.;

3. Industrial parts: mechanical parts, gears, bushings, valves, fasteners, handles, toys, screws, shock absorbers, etc.;

4. Industrial materials: plates, strips, tubes, etc.;

5. Mechanical parts: gears, cams, hose connectors, clips, switches, etc.

POM Processing Method

When choosing a processing method, factors such as the size, shape, precision requirements, and production batches of the product need to be considered. In addition, in order to ensure the processing quality and product performance, it is necessary to control the processing temperature, pressure, speed and other parameters, and carry out necessary post-processing, such as polishing and grinding.

Injection molding is a method of injecting molten polyoxymethylene POM into the mold, cooling and solidifying to obtain the required parts. This method is suitable for high-volume production and can produce high-precision, high-quality products.

Extrusion molding is a method in which molten polyoxymethylene POM is extruded through an extruder, and then cut or stretched into a desired shape. This method is suitable for small batch production and can produce thinner wall and more complex parts.

Compression molding is a method in which molten polyoxymethylene POM is put into a mold, expanded and solidified into a desired shape by high pressure and high temperature. This method is suitable for high-volume production and can produce high-precision, high-quality products.

cutting processing is to use cutting tools to cut, mill and drill polyoxymethylene POM. This method is suitable for the production of precision parts or products requiring special shapes.

Surface treatment of POM

There are often some defects on the surface of POM products, such as burrs, white spots, etc. After the product is completed, it can be deburred by high-pressure air jet or manual polishing; the surface of the product can be processed by a polishing machine to make it smooth.
